A term applied to metals, most usually to steel alloys and copper alloys that have good machinability; this latter is not easy to define; it relates either to the resistance to cutting offered by a metal or to its effect on the cutting capacity of a given tool, and depends on the hardness of the metal, on the cutting speed and on some other factors; the elements lead, sulphur and some others are commonly added to metals to improve short brittle chips rather than long spirals of metal during machining.
