An alloy of a series hard materials that are applied to the surface of mild steel, etc., in order to obtain a wear-resistant face; the usual materials, which are frequently welded to working faces, include: 1) iron-base alloys containing up to 20 % of the alloying elements: chromium, manganese and silicon, together with small amounts of tungsten, molybdenum and nickel; 2) iron-base alloys containing from 20 to 50 % of the following elements: chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, nickel, cobalt, manganese, silicon, vanadium and zirconium; 3) stellites or chromium, cobalt, tungstens alloys; 4) composite materials consisting of tungsten carbide particles in matrix of steel; 5) austenitic steel; 6) hard bronze, nickel base alloys containing silicon and boron.
