A method of cutting ferrous metals, using a stream of oxygen in a torch. The metal is heated to about 820 °C by the torch, and it then assumes a bright-red colour. Oxygen is introduced through a central jet in the torch, and oxidation of the hot metal to magnetic oxide of iron occurs. The heat of the reaction 3Fe+202=Fe3O4 contributes a large proportion of the heat for the continuation of the process. In practice,it happens that nearly one-third of the metal removed is actually washed away by the stream of gas, without oxidation. Machine-operated flame cutters can be made to work to close tolerances, and the finished edge is smooth.
