The characteristic and popular large veneered mahogany bureau à caissons latéraux or writing-table with lateral compartments was essentially similar to the lower portion of the bureau à cylindre. It had an oblong top inset with a leather panel and rimmed with bronze doré, and it was fitted with pull-out slides at each end inset with leather panels. The front was usually designed with five or seven narrow drawers of equal depth. The long front center drawer was flanked by two or three rows of small lateral drawers. This arrangement provided ample space for the knees of the writer. It is often thought that this writing table derived from the Louis XIV bureau semainier.
