What makes this system unique is that auction is regressive rather than progressive, as it is with a live auctioneer. This four-foot diameter clock is marked in quarter cent graduations. The operating auctioneer starts the clock at a figure much higher than that particular grade is selling for and the clock hand drops a quarter of a cent at a time until a buyer makes a bid. Each company (there are usually six or seven buyers) has a stop button assigned to it, by which to register its bids. When the declining hand reaches a buyer's pre-determined price for the pallet of leaf being offered, he stops the clock by pressing his button, the buyer's number, as well as the price, is then registered on the clock. Only one buyer can stop the clock at one time... If a buyer loses a pallet of tobacco to a competitor at a similar bid, he will have to raise his next bid by at least one-quarter of a cent, by pressing his button sooner on the next sale. This maintains the competitive factor in reverse auction, the same as it is in progressive auction.
Note :
Canada is the only country in the world that sells tobacco with a Dutch Clock.
