Xeroderma pigmentosum is an inherited skin condition in which all protective resistance to the irritating action in actinic rays is lacking. For some unexplained reason, in this disease those portions of the skin exposed to sunlight, notably that on the hands and the face, inevitably develop multiple lethal cancers; the only way for people with this condition to avoid cancer is to avoid sunlight or other radiation that includes rays beyond the violet end of the spectrum.
