Définition :
D'après les tenants de cette thèse, dans chaque cellule un seul X serait actif chez la femme, l'un des deux X de la cellule somatique serait inactivé au 12e jour de la vie embryonnaire. Cette estimation est fondée sur la date d'apparition du corpuscule chromatinien.

According to the advocates of this concept in each cell only one X chromosome is active. In the human female on of the two X chromosomes of the somatic cell is said to be inactivated at about the twelfth day of ambrionic life. This estimate is based on the date of appearance of the chromatin body.
