/Type of/ caries, also called senile caries because of the general age of incidence, /which/ presents a pattern similar to that of dentinal caries. Generally the enamel is not involved because of the recession of the gingiva. The caries starts at Sharpey's fibers (a type of collagen fibers found in the cementum) and spreads rapidly in a broad outline. /.../ Clinically there may be only a small opening but the lesion may be quite advanced.
