((...)) a tall tree with straight trunk and spreading top, covers great tracts of the pine barrens of the southern states ((of USA)) ((...)). It is a fine species 80 to 100 feet high, having sometimes a girth to 6 or 8 feet. Th timber of this pine, though soft and brittle, is much used for lumber and pulpwood, but the forest of it are of no importance to the naval-stores industry because of the poor quality of the derived oils and turpentine.
