A tall tree with crooked branches, greenish-white flowers, and blue or purple fruit that occurs on dry or moist site throughout the eastern United States and Southern Ontario ((...)) known for its brilliant red autumn foliage. It is a medium to large tree, ordinarily not more than 60 feet tall ((...)) but occasionally attaining 100 feet ((...)). The bark of mature trees sometimes resembles the pattern of alligator hide. The wood of the water tupelo and black gum is used principally in furniture manufacture and also for boxes, crates, baskets, wooden utensils, flooring, pistol grips and gunstocks, and as core for veneers of more valuable woods.
