Practically, a delay line whose key elements are the piezoelectric crystal (generally a highly polished slice of quartz or lithium niobate) which supports the propagating acoustic wave and the input & output interdigital transducers (IDT's).
I.e. metallic comb-like electrodes (or fingers), usually composed of a thin aluminium film, which form an interleaved pattern on the substrate surface and provide the electric-to-acoustic conversion process.Notes :
The wave propagates on the crystal surface at a velocity of about 3000 m/s and because of the piezoelectricity of the substrate, it is accompanied by electric fields extending both into and above the crystal.
This provides access to the wave along its entire propagation path, in contrast with conventional microwave acoustic devices based on volume acoustic waves.Termes :
- surface acoustic wave device
- SAW device
