The first usable friction "lighters" with phosphorus similar to matches which were invented by an Englishman, Sir William Congreve.
Note :
Phosphorus ignities at a heat of only 60 °C which can also be reached by friction. The Congreve matches are said to have been available on the market in 1822 and manufacture Germany was said to have started in 1832. For health reasons they are now prohibited by the health authorities of nearly all countries and have been replaced practically completely by the so-called safety matches.
