Pipe bowls cut from the soft, porous, usually white, light-yellow to grey sepiolite tubes.
Notes :
The bowls are light in weight, have a high absorption capacity and break easily. The mouthpieces of these pipes are made mostly of genuine amber and in cheaper versions, sometimes from hard rubber.
The centre of the manufacture of meerschaum pipes is Viena. Budapest and Ruhla/Thuringia were also important. According to tradition, the manufacture of meerschaum pipes goes back to Count Andrassy and a Budapest cobbler named Kovacs. It is, however, certain that meerschaum pipes were made before that in Turkey where the best meerschaum (sepiolite) material is found.Termes :
