A selective theory of antibody formation proposed by Burnet, ((...)) developed to explain the vast array of immune globulins capable of being produced and the absence of antibodies that react with the animal's own cells.
Note :
According to this theory, during embryonic development a vast population of lymphoid cells is produced, each of which possesses the ability to synthesize a different antibody. Subsequently there is selection of only those cells that produce antibodies with configurations that are not complementary to any antigens normally present in the embryo. Clones of these cells form the antibody-producing machinery of the adult.
