Any region of messenger RNA not coding for protein.
Note :
All the mRNAs that have been purified are known to contain more nucleotides than are required for coding. These extra residues, presumably present on each side of the coding region, and defined as the 5' and 3' untranslated regions are of unknown function and probably serve in translational control, the termination of transcription, the addition of poly, the binding of transport proteins and mRNA degradation.
