((A device in which)) the paper specimen is clamped over a circular diaphragm of thin rubber (standard English orifice 1.2" in diameter or Continental Standard 10 sq.cm. or about 1.4" in diameter); by turning a wheel (in modern types by electric motor) a piston forces glycerine against the underside of the diaphragm (in Schopper-Dalen's instrument by means of air pressure) which presses against the paper with increasing force until the fibres give way and are pulled asunder, the pressure at bursting point being recorded on a dial by a pointer. The height of the bulge made in the paper, hence the degree of stretch caused in the specimen can also be recorded. The bursting or Pop' strength is indicated by the number of lb. per. sq. inch or kg/sq.cm. required to burst the specimen; the results should also record the area of the testing surface (usually 1 sq.inch or 6.4515 sq.cm.) and the substance of the paper.
Note :
There are other paper testers of this type (Mullen's is manufactured in Europe and U.S.A.) such as the Ashcroft, the Schopper-Dalen and the Goodbrand, with glycerine or air-pressure, but they all work on the same principle, differing only in structural details. Another type, the Persoz (French?) and a model by Lhomme & Argy operates in combination with the tensile strength tester by means of a ball, i.e. ball pressure.
