The terminal tooth or root that retains or supports a prosthesis, ((...)) united to the prosthesis proper by means of the retainer.
Notes :
"Abutment" is sometimes incorrectly used to indicate the retainer or clasp of a fixed or removable partial denture. Properly it is supporting or anchor tooth.
Some authors give a broader meaning to "abutment": to them, it is not only the tooth itself, but also the retainer. In other words they use the name of one component of the supporting structure, the abutment, to describe the whole structure. This extension of the meaning of "abutment" seems to be due to the lack of a specific term in English to describe the concept of "abutment" + "retainer" which, in French, is called "pilier de pont".Termes :
