An automatic switch stand is a stand in which the points are held in position by a heavy spring, acting on the connecting rod through a crank.
Note :
When a trailing movement is made through the switch in the direction other than that for which the points are set, the spring initially resists (...); but as the wheels force the points over beyond the mid point of the turnout, the crank turns beyond dead centre and (...) the spring then throws the points over the rest of the way and holds the points in their new position, properly lined for the movements being made. The target of the stand rotates to show the new position of the points, but the handle does not move. Once the points have been put into their new position by trailing through them, they continue in the same position until the switch is reversed by hand or by making another trailing movement from the other side of the turnout. An automatic switch stand (...) is meant to be trailed routinely in yard operations without giving trouble. They are most commonly used in busy classification yards (type 22P).
