It increasingly occurs in the so-called naturally nicotine-free tobaccos in which it partly fulfils the role of the nicotine as tobacco characteristics, It can be generally said that irrigation or sprinkling or a humid cimate promote the conversion of nicotine into nornicotine. American research scientists have examined the aroma of the smoke of cigarettes containing a considerable amount of nornicotine in comparison with those containing nicotine only and found that the cigarettes of high nornicotine content leave less aroma, probably because of the high myosmin and pyridine bases content. In this context, the presence of nornicotine in nicotiana glutinosa is also of interest because it may be connected with the resistance to mosaic of this type of nicotiana.
