An antiviral agent that is a synthetic nucleoside analogue of guanosine.
Note :
Interfers with biosynthesis of guanylic acid nucleotides. Active against DNA and RNA viruses including influenza, murine hepatitis and lassa fever viruses. As good in vitro as cytarabine hydrochloride, adenine arabinoside and indoxurdine against DNA viruses. It is superior to amantadine both in vitro and in vivo against influenza virus A, Az and B and parainfluenza virus. Placebo-controlled studies of hepatitis A patients in Brazil showed that the drug accelerated the return to normal of elevated serum bilibriun and of liver enzymes in the serum. A comparable study in U.S.A. of hepatitis B patients revealed no such beneficial effect. Animal studies suggest that ribavirin can produce anaemia, immunosuppression and in rodents, terato genesis.
