The forerunner of the venetian blind was the jalousie, a fixed vertical blind or shutter made of a series of slats sloping outward to prevent the entrance of rain or wind and yet permit light. In the nineteenth century, craftsmen perfected the jalousie so that the slats, by means of cords and tape, turned both inward and outward and could be raised and lowered.
