Traitement (généralement de revenu) à une température convenable et dans une atmosphère produisant un film uniforme bleu adhérant à la surface exempte d'oxyde de l'acier.
Opération effectuée en milieu et à température convenables pour que la surface polie du métal se recouvre d'une couche uniforme d'oxyde adhérent de couleur bleue.
Formation d'un film bleu très mince d'oxyde sur l'acier poli ou sur la fonte, soit par chauffage à l'air, soit par immersion dans des solutions oxydantes concentrées.
