The containment of excess useful thermal energy, i.e. heat available at a temperature above that of the environment, for use at times when demand for heat exceeds supply, or to act as a "buffer store" between supply and demand.
Note :
Most hot water or steam distribution systems for domestic and industrial purposes make use of tanks or pressure vessels for heat storage. Incorporating these buffer stores into the system reduces the required rated output of the boiler, and leads to more continuous operation, so reducing maintenance and increasing thermal efficiency. ((...)) Heat storage assumes particular importance in the exploitation of unpredictable energy sources such as solar and wind energy, and in heat recovery from industrial processes.
