Date :Définition
The most important and the most abundant of the platinum group metals; platinum is a white metal, slightly greyer and somewhat less lustrous than silver; it is soft and is readily malleable and ductile, so that ingots can be rolled in the cold, but the metal is usually worked about 800 °C when rapid reduction is possible; it is drawn into wire and rolled into sheets and the latter are formed by spinning and stamping; platinum and platinum alloys are largely used as catalysts in various manufacturing processes and in the construction of high-temperature thermocouples; remark: the term "platina" is used in reference to an old alloy formerly used for such things as metal buttons which were usually cast; it was white in colour but rather brittle; the composition was zn 75 % and cu 25 %.
