A nondrying oil obtained from the castor bean and consisting chiefly of glycerides of ricinoleic acid.
Notes :
Soluble in alcohol, ether, benzene, chloroform and carbon disulphide.
Castor oil and its derivatives have industrial application as plasticizers, as a source of nylon monomers (sebacid and aminoundecanoic acids), in Turkey Red oil, and as lubricants and hydraulic brake fluids. When dehydrated by heating with catalysts, castor oil has the properties of a drying oil; when "blown" with air heated, it can be used as a modifier in paints and protective coatings. It can also be hydrogenated to a waxy solid and polymerized.
A liquid of moderate viscosity, it is well-known for its repulsive taste, which restricts its use as a laxative.Termes :
