A long-acting narcotic antagonist, which, administered either orally or by injection in given amounts, will reduce the psychological and physiological effects of a corresponding amount of any morphine-like drug.
Note :
Cyclazocine, like other narcotic antagonists, will precipitate withdrawal symptoms when administered to someone physically dependent upon narcotics. The addict is first withdrawn from heroin. Then he is given regular maintenance shots of cyclazocine, which acts to build up a large degree of tolerance to heroin in his system. As long as he continues taking the cyclazocine, a heroin injection will have little or no effect on him, except in large amounts. Thus, under medical supervision, on an outpatient basis, the patient can be effectively weaned from his dependence upon heroin, making it easier for him to break out of the addict's heroincentered life pattern.
