Note :

A coal refining process designed to produce a clean sulphur-free fuel for use in steam-raising boilers.
Note :
It was originally studied as a possible method of de-ashing coal prior to use. Coal is crushed and slurried with recycled solvent and fed with hydrogen into a pressurized reactor maintained at a temperature of 450 °C. The products emerging from the reactor are filtered to remove char and ash and the resulting liquid fractionated to give an appreciable yield of light liquid products together with the solvent refined coal. Gaseous products are treated to recover sulphur. The refined coal has a low ash and sulphur content and has a relatively low melting point of around 150 °C. The process itself requires only small quantities of hydrogen and no catalyst is needed. Pilot plant operation has been successful and a 10,000 ton per day plant has been designed.
