Ciliary neurotrophic factor, which was first characterized in the early 1980s, is one of the most researched cytokines. It is a protein produced by the supporting cells of the nervous system, notably the oligodendrocytes of the central nervous system and the Schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system that manufacture the myelin sheaths encasing axons. It promotes the survival of damaged or degenerating motor neurons, particularly of the spinal cord, and its main indication, therefore, is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
