A type of index often used for measuring changes, e.g. in prices. It is relatively easy to construct and uses base-period weights.
Note :
The index utilises the following method: where, p0 = price in the base-year; Q0 = quantity in the base-year; and Pn = price in the year being considered. In times of rising prices, the index tends to over-estimate price increases. The reason for this is that no account is taken of the possible fall in the consumption of those goods whose prices have grown fastest, or of the possible increase in consumption of those goods whose prices have fallen, relatively speaking.
