Circulating IgG antibodies with the ability to mimic TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone, thyrotropin) by binding to the TSH receptor of thyroid cells and activating adenylate cyclase, thus causing an increase in the level of intracellular second messenger cylic AMP, which result in the release of thyroid hormones; thought to be responsible for most cases of Graves'disease.
