The prompt occurrence of smooth muscle contractions when isolated strips of smooth muscles, bathed in a physiologic solution, are exposed to an antigen to which the tissue has previously been actively or passively sensitized. This in vitro demonstration of anaphylaxis results from release of histamine and slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) following the interaction of cell-bound IgE antibodies with the antigen.
Note :
Schultz employed intestinal muscle; Dale used uterine muscle.
