The stimpmeter is the most reliable way to measure green speed. The stimpmeter is a 91.44 cm (36 in.) aluminium bar. The top side of the bar is grooved to allow a golf ball to roll smoothly along its length. A notch 76.2 cm (30 in.) from the bottom end of the bar is cut in the grooved side. To use the stimpmeter, select a level part of the green. Place a golf ball in the notch while the bar lies flat on the green. Slowly lift the notched end of the stimpmeter until the ball releases from the notch and rolls along the bar and onto the green. Repeat this three times. The three balls should be within close proximity to each other. Measure the distance the balls rolled and determine the average distance for the three balls. We will call this measurement DISTANCE TO LEFT. Repeat this procedure with three balls in the opposite direction on the green. Determine the average distance these three balls have rolled. This will be DISTANCE TO RIGHT. Add these two distances together and divide by two to calculate the green speed. The stimpmeter was developed in the United States and measurements are commonly given in feet and inches. Ideal green speeds for both tournament and membership play will vary between different grass types and green designs. Small, undulating greens need not be as fast as large, flat greens. Acceptable green speeds will range from 4.5 ft. to 10.5 ft. depending upon turf conditions and the membership's preferences.
