Storm signals ((are)) distant signals in the form of black canvas cones hoisted at coastguard stations and other prominent places along the coast when a gale is forecast. When the point of the cone is up, a northerly gale is forecast, with the point downwards, the gale is expected from the south. These are known as north and south cones respectively. When an easterly gale is forecast a south cone is hoisted above a north; a north cone above a south warns a westerly gale. Storm cones were introduced in 1861 by Rear Admiral Robert Fitzroy when he was superintendent of the meteorological department of the Board of Trade in London.
