La distinction entre compétence et performance a été introduite par N. Chomsky.
La compétence d'un sujet parlant français sera représentée dans la grammaire générative du français.

The grammar specifies as grammatical an infinite number of sentences, including ones of great length and structural complexity. Not all of these will be found in performance, while performance does contain imperfect utterances that are not part of competence. Competence can thus be regarded as an idealisation from performance.
It is controversial which phenomena are to be treated as competence and which as performance. A proposed extension to the scope of competence is found in the notion of communicative competence, which concerns the ability to produce and understand contextually appropriate utterances.Terme :
