The filtration run begins by rapidly recirculating a slurry of D.E. precoat through the filter and back to the precoat tank. The precoat filter cake becomes a thin 1.5 mm, protective coating on the filter septum. When the recirculating liquid (usually beer, but sometimes water) becomes clear, the precoat has been established and beer filtration is begun. Beer is pumped through the filter while D.E. is constantly metered into the beer. A normal length of run would be 8 to 12 hours.
