Interfaces are physicochemically active areas at which a considerable force exists because of the absorptive power of finely divided solids and the surface tension of liquids. Together these comprise what is known as interfacial tension. This affects the foregoing situations as follows: (1) as a result of strong physical or chemical absorption of gases at the interface, solid particles (especially metals) are able to act catalysts; (2) solid particles of such materials as clays are not "wetted" by liquids of high surface tension (water) and do not form uniform dispersions without the aid of a wetting agent; (3) in liquid-liquid dispersions (oil-in-water), the interfacial tension holds the droplets apart: thus, a detergent is necessary to decrease the tension enough to permit miscibility, as in emulsions. The study of interfacial phenomena comprises a large part of the science of colloid chemistry.
