Définitions :
Conversion du charbon en combustible gazeux.
Méthode contrôlée de réaction du charbon, de la vapeur et de l'oxygène, sous pression et à une température élevée.
Note :
On purifie le gaz brut qui permet d'obtenir un gaz à u.t.b. peu élevée. Le recyclage catalytique ultérieur permet de produire un gaz à u.t.b. élevée de qualité pipeline.

Date :Définition
The conversion of coal (a solid) to a gas which is suitable for use as a fuel.
Notes :
Different mixtures of gaseous products may be obtained from coal, depending on reaction conditions, but broadly these may be classified into three groups: low, medium and high-Btu gases. Their respective calorific value ranges are < 350 Btu/ft3 (< 13.0 MJ/m3), 350-700 Btu/ft3 (13.0-26.0 MJ/m3) and > 700 Btu/ft3 (>26.0 MJ/m3). The old town gas, made from coal, was a medium-Btu gas consisting mainly of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. This has largely been superseded by natural gas ((...)) It is envisaged that coal gasification will play an important part inovercoming the problems caused by depleting reserves of natural gas in the United States.
The basic process involves crushing coal to a powder, then heating this material in the presence of steam and oxygen. The gas produced is then refined to reduce the content of sulfur and other impurities and to increase the methane content. Also under investigation are methods of burning coal in situ; that is, burning the coal while it remains underground to produce gas. This eliminates the need for physically recovering coal from areas difficult or impossible to mine.Terme :
