Définition :
Composé organique naturel ou synthétique qui, appliqué à très faible dose, améliore, inhibe ou modifie les processus physiologiques chez les plantes et entraîne une modification de leur comportement après pénétration et diffusion à l'intérieur du végétal; il agit notamment sur la différenciation et l'élongation cellulaire.
Note :
Les substances de croissance comprennent entre autres : les « inhibiteurs de croissance » ou « limitateurs de végétation », les « nanifiants », les « inhibiteurs de germination » ou « anti-germes » (de pommes de terre), les « raccourcisseurs de paille » (produits à action antiverse).

Natural or synthetic chemical substance capable at low concentrations and through physiological action of accelerating or retarding the rate of growth or maturation, or of otherwise altering the behaviour of plants, after application and translocation inside the plant.
Note :
Plant growth regulators include among others synthetic compounds known as "inhibitors" and "retardants"; their functions are to prevent sprouting of stored onions, potatoes and other root crops, to induce shortening of stems and to prevent lodging of grain. They also permit controlled growth of flower crops and ornamentals.
