The right of people to assemble in public or private for the purpose of joining for a common cause and to associate with one another to achieve their goal. The right of association is a perquisite to the right of organization for the purpose of collective bargaining. Denial of freedom of association by a government dooms opportunity for organization of labor unions.
The term has been used as the equivalent of the right to organize, but historically the right of persons to get together and act for a common purpose or seek a common objective is far broader than the right of organization for purposes of collective bargaining. The right of association permits joint action of groups to do so without the necessity of obtaining a prior public grant of authority.Note :
The International Labor Organization has sponsored conventions which seek to protect the right of both labor and employer groups to freedom of association for the purposes of mutual aid and protection.
