A garden path sentence is a sentence that is legal in a language, but which we incorrectly parse on first reading.
Note :
The significance of garden path sentences is that they provide psychological evidence as to how we parse sentences. In particular, we appear sometimes to make decisions about syntactic structure before it would seem prudent to do so, and having made decisions we seem to commit ourselves to them, resisting the kind of backtracking one finds in computational systems such as augmented transition network parsers.
